Engaging in low-cost prepping is achievable. It is essential for everyone to be ready for the potential negative consequences of the current state of affairs. However, there is no need to exhaust our finances by investing thousands of dollars in survival gear. It is entirely feasible to visit Walmart, or a similar store in your country, and acquire the necessary items on your survival checklist without breaking the bank.
After conducting my own investigation, I have compiled a collection of items that are affordable yet crucial in disastrous situations, with each item costing no more than five dollars. These items can be categorized into five significant groups. Moreover, I have extended my research to identify ten of the least expensive and most beneficial items in this regard. Additionally, I have provided information on essential survival strategies and techniques that require no additional expenditure.
Stormproof Match Kit with Waterproof Case
The Stormproof Match Kit is a waterproof container that contains 25 matches and 3 strikers. Unlike other matches that claim to be waterproof or windproof, UCO Stormproof Matches are simple to ignite and will remain lit for up to 15 seconds, even when submerged in water. Having the ability to consistently create a fire is crucial for cooking, producing heat, and creating signal fires in survival scenarios. UCO Stormproof Matches are ideal for camping, emergency kits, and should be included in every 10 Essentials checklist.
Analog thermometer (Mercury-type) thermometer
Despite the numerous options available, the traditional shake down glass analog thermometer holds a specific advantage. In preparation for an electromagnetic pulse, it is advisable to choose an analog thermometer as all digital versions will become inoperable. The mentioned thermometer is non-toxic, mercury-free, and performs equally well compared to the toxic mercury alternatives. Additionally, it is capable of displaying measurements in both Fahrenheit and Celsius.
Hawke’s Special Forces Survival Handbook
The cost of Hawke’s Special Forces Survival Handbook ~ The Portable Guide to Getting Out Alive by Mykel Hawke varies from $10 to $15. Mykel Hawke, a Captain in the U.S. Special Forces and an expert in outdoor survival, offers practical and easily understandable skills and knowledge essential for outdoor survival. The book is thoughtfully designed and contains a wealth of information. It is both an enjoyable read and an excellent resource for reference purposes.
Emergency Ration Bars
Preppers often have a good supply of Meals Ready to Eat (MREs), freeze dried foods, rice and beans, and canned goods. However, they often don’t prioritize carrying a ration bar. The advantage of having an emergency ration bar available is that it is compact, does not create thirst, and provides sufficient nutrition for an entire crisis. These bars can withstand extreme conditions and temperatures, ranging from 22F to 149F, making them suitable to pack in your vehicle (although too heavy for a bugout bag). The ration bars are conveniently ready-to-eat, providing 410 calories per serving.
First aid
When discussing low cost prepping, it is important to note that the sub-list below consists of basic pills commonly found in drugstores and pharmacies. These pills effectively alleviate inflammation and pain. Additionally, I will include a few necessary items for treating wounds. These affordable and readily accessible first aid items can be extremely valuable in emergency situations. It is absolutely vital to have these essential items in every survival backpack.
- First aid kits from American Red Cross. They are sealed and each can serve a person.
- First aid kit from Curad – it includes sterile dressings and patches
- Band-Aid’s All Purpose Cloth Tape
- Paracetamol (at least one pack)
- Tylenol (at least one pack)
- Benadryl capsules (at least one pack)
- Advil/ibuprofen (at least one pack)
- Emergency Mylar thermal blankets
- Betadine solution (it’s an anti-bacterial solution, get at least one bottle)
- Neosporin spray (it’s a pain-relieving and antiseptic spray)
The maximum total cost of first aid items is $60.
Water
As previously stated, it is impossible to survive without water for an extended period. The good news is that bottled water is inexpensive and doesn’t spoil easily. You can hoard as much as necessary. It is advised to have around 2 gallons per person per day for drinking and sanitation. Acquiring an even larger quantity would be wise, as one can never predict unforeseen circumstances.
Although bottled water remains a cost-effective option, it is important to consider that there are alternative methods of water purification available. In fact, I have written a comprehensive article detailing the most effective ways to purify water, some of which may necessitate additional investment in terms of time and/or money.
In addition, you can also purchase other affordable consumable liquids. For less than $5, you can buy powdered milk which can be used to prepare two gallons of milk. By mixing it with coffee and boiled water, you can have a satisfactory substitute. Similarly, instant coffee and cappuccino mixes are also available for under $5. While it may not be as extravagant as your desired latte, it can still provide some comfort during a difficult day.
Hygiene Items
Health, hygiene, and sanctuary items hold significant importance in ensuring your survival. However, they are readily available and can be acquired at low costs, making it effortlessly manageable to prepare in advance. It is advisable to accumulate the subsequent essential items on a regular basis as they are vital for both your daily routine and for potentially saving your life:
- Toothpaste and toothbrushes (one for every family member)
- Tampons
- Tissues
- Toilet paper (see more on wonders of TP further in the article)
- Bleach (at least two gallons; also see more explanation further down)
- Washing liquid
- A small sewing kit with needles and thread
